Cleanses, extreme calorie restrictions, and most rapid fat loss strategies are wildly unhealthy. Almost invariably, they result in a person losing some of their desired weight at first and then immediately putting it back on at the conclusion.

Many of us put on a few unnecessary pounds during our winter hibernation months, and with summer just around the corner, you may want to drop a couple pounds in short order. And you can! Just don’t be stupid about it.

Considering going on a diet of maple syrup and lemon juice to shed that last bit of weight? Terrible idea. The best diet is the one that you can maintain indefinitely. Otherwise, you’ll be in a constant state of weight fluctuations. If you value your long-term physical and mental health, do not use cleanses or anything that advertises crazy fast fat loss. However, if you are going to hit the reset button on your unhealthy lifestyle with a quick and dirty week of dieting, you might as well do it for free.

The best “cleanse” is simply fasting. If you want to gain any of the benefits advertised by a cleanse or prep phase (a mostly nonsensical fitness term that usually refers to the first part of a diet), all you have to do is fast for a short period of time. Your body does not need to prepare to react to stimuli—cleanses and prep phases are wholly unnecessary before starting a diet. Sure, these things will help you drop a ton of weight in a very short period of time—that’s why people love them—but they provide no long-term benefit of any kind.

Remember, anything advertised as a detox—or whatever other similarly bullshit term a company uses—is a scam. Best-case scenario, you get a multivitamin; worst case, it’s a sugar pill. 

If you want to rapidly drop weight and “reset your metabolism” (which is literally impossible) in just one week, try this!

(Note: The strategy I outline here is not a long-term diet. If you don’t continue to eat healthy afterward, it will be for nothing. Do not attempt this if you don’t want to, or if you have any other problems that would make this unhealthy for you.)

·Day 1. Drink only water, but drink as much as you’d like—the sky’s the limit! I’d aim for at least three liters. This zero-calorie drink will allow you to rapidly lose weight.

·Day 2. Keep drinking only water! But also eat as many leafy green veggies (e.g., spinach, kale, broccoli) as you’d like. (No potatoes or corn.)

·Day 3. Add protein to your dinner! Continue to drink only water, eat as many veggies as you’d like, and add six ounces of healthy lean protein (e.g., fish, chicken, pork, eggs) to your diet.

·Day 4. Add protein to your breakfast! Eggs, yogurt, or cottage cheese are all great options. Continue to eat leafy greens, drink lots of water (and only water), and eat protein with dinner.

·Day 5. Add carbs back to your diet in moderation. Continue to eat lots of veggies and protein, but understand that carbs aren’t the devil. Add starchy veggies and fruits in today before going back to things like quinoa and rice.

And … voila! You are on a now on a healthy diet that you can do indefinitely. This five-day “cleanse” is completely unnecessary, but will undoubtedly result in rapid weight loss.
